Perched on a hillside in the Innis Arden neighborhood of Shoreline Washington, this home was reworked from the inside out to capitalize on its stunning views of the Puget Sound. The once petite kitchen was expanded, rooms reconfigured and many of the interior walls removed allowing unobstructed views from almost the entire main living level. White Space Design Group developed a fresh palette of soothing whites and creams blended with warm wood tones to create a visually calming and airy space that upon entering will melt your worries away. Several wood furniture pieces built by the client were worked into the design providing an extra special touch to the space.

Modern Craftsman House

Location: West Seattle, WA

Architect: Michael L. Jones

Tasked with reviving the tired craftsman style home, White Space Design Group set out to preserve the character while weaving in mid century and industrial influences that appealed to the client. The once closed offed kitchen was exposed to the stunning city views and the dining room was worked into the expanded space to support large gatherings. The result is an inviting scene that fosters meaningful conversations over a drawn-out meal and portrays an “all are welcome” vibe. The Primary Bathroom was relocated to capitalize on the views, made possible by extending an existing dormer. The hall bathroom received a finish update that feels just playful enough for a young family and adult guests alike.

Harris House

Location: Seattle, WA

Photographer: Cleary O’Farrell

This mid-century rambler located in the heart of Seattle needed an updated layout and expanded kitchen. To achieve a cozy and modern yet inviting kitchen space, the design team combined soft grey and warm classic walnut for the cabinets and paired with crisp white tones in the counter tops and tile. The team utilized deep blue tones and textural grass cloth in the dining room to create a jewel box look and feel. A seating nook was created for casual dining and family time as well as additional storage and display. Navy cement tile floors and modern floral walls were designed for the powder room.

Discovery House

Location: Seattle, WA

Photographer: Cleary O'Farrell

Located in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle, this mid-century home had been in a need of a modern face lift. The design team decided to purposely create an open floor plan that produced direct sight lines all throughout the home. In an effort to support young children and a large dog, the team focused on selecting the appropriate finishes and materials. Upon entering the home, visitors are greeted with a modern interpretation of traditional flagstone flooring. Wood slat wall detail surrounding the stairs offer a formal entry foyer while providing a sense of the space beyond. The previously compartmentalized kitchen was opened and is now the focal point in the main living area. Black stained rift cut oak cabinets add a dramatic interest accompanied by a geometric tile back splash in a subtle grey tone and marble inspired quartz counter top. Crisp white walls enhance the natural light in the home and amplifies the warmth and drama of the wood elements and black accents. The windows were intentionally left empty in order to pull the surrounding greenery inward, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior and to stay true to the client’s minimalist aesthetic preferences. A mix of traditional and modern materials come together in the master bathroom. Warm walnut cabinets are striking against a full height black tile back splash. The black and white marble mosaic floor tile adds just enough pattern and sense of luxury. The home is rounded out with a mix of vintage mid-century and new modern furniture. Layers of neutral fabrics, subtle patterns and high contrasting accessories adds interest and softness.

The Shaw House is a quintessential bungalow located in the View Ridge neighborhood of Seattle. The owners were seeking a more functional and cohesive layout with upgraded finishes and fixtures to reflect a timeless yet approachable and family-friendly space. The entire second level and descending stairs were transformed to enhance the area while still reflecting the character of the home. In order to open the main living space, the design team relocated the previously galley-style kitchen to the other side of main level and added additional windows and skylights to bring in more of the natural light. Materials and finishes included painted bead board, black and white tones paired with warm oak, brass and black hardware, along with pattern/texture and color to add interest and depth.
